Saint Louis, MO. April 18, 2017– Cities and communities around the world are entering the next era of transformational change in which citizens and their surrounding natural and built environments are increasingly connected by Smart Technologies. In the coming Smart City industrial revolution, Smart Technologies will widen the playing field to include greater participation of individuals and ideas from all walks of life. When complete, the Smart City Community Platform will provide for job creation and workforce development, research, education and unprecented collaboration opportunities for the St. Louis region.
By building upon the proven success of the Brooking's Institute model, iNeighborhoods.us and strategic partners will plan, design and activate an inclusive Smart City community platform (the Delmar Loop Innovation Neighborhood, Delmar Divide and Art Hill), that allows persons from all walks of life to participate in the digital innovation economy: Smart City St. Louis. The platform will be built across and through the Delmar Divide and into the inclusive heart and soul of St. Louis – Forest Park Art Hill.
With construction of the St. Louis Regional Internet Exchange STL-RIX now complete, the Washington University School of Engineering & Applied Science in collaboration with the Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship and iNeighborhoods.us, filed a National Science Foundation Smart + Connected Communities planning grant in February.
Given these recent accomplishments, iNeighborhoods.us, the St. Louis Regional Internet Exchange and strategic partners, will continue to build upon the vision described in the St. Louis chapter of “Smart Economy in Smart Cities”, an international collaborative research project which describes 13 city research case studies in 10 countries throughout North America, Europe, Africa and Asia to explain how a smart economy changes the world around us. St. Louis is the only American City featured in “Smart Economy in Smart Cities”. The co-authors of the St. Louis chapter include David Sandel, Francis Chmelir, Jim Brasunas and editor Kelly Oman.
Cities included in the internationally collaborative Smart Cities research were Hong Kong, Ottawa, New Delhi, St. Louis, Stuttgart, Bologna, Cape Town, Nairobi, Dakar, Lagos, Varanasi, Vijayawada and Kozhikode. St. Louis chapter lead author David Sandel, Co-founder of iNeighborhoods.us explains, “This is an incredible moment, for the St. Louis region to implement an inclusive community platform which creates opportunity for all, and positions our regions creative and entrepreneurial ecosystems for the Smart City and Internet of Things (IoT) revolution”.
The Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the School of Engineering & Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis and iNeighborhoods.us are inviting leaders from across the business, civic, and cultural landscape of St. Louis to review implementation to date, the plan moving forward, and meet the four co-authors and editor of the St. Louis chapter of “Smart Economy in Smart Cities”.
